Ben Sledsens

oil and acrylic on canvas
17 1/8 x 15 3/4 inches

Belgian artist Ben Sledsens’ work is unquestionably aware of art history, perhaps most clearly the style and mood of French post-Impressionist painter Henri Rousseau. With his seemingly naïve style and fantastical subject matter, he creates worlds full of potent symbols, strange characters, and poetic natural settings, seen here in Window View. Depicted from a high vantage point with a flowering branch blocking the sky, the painting shows a road winding through a verdant landscape comprised of a range of lush, green brushstrokes. Sledsens’ work has been included in gallery shows in Europe and the US, and his work is in the collections of M HKA, Antwerpen, and Fundación Canaria para el Desarrollo de la Pintura, Las Palmas De Gran Canaria.
