OLD TOWN

2017
oil on canvas
96 x 72 inches

Self-taught painter Matthew Wong gravitates towards landscapes as a framework for his intuitive experimentation with styles, colors, and paint application. Here, Old Town bears signs of his independent studies in art history with its sinewy fauna, bold brushstrokes, and asymmetrical composition alluding to classical Chinese painting and works by post-impressionist artists like Cézanne, Gauguin, and Van Gogh. Born in Toronto, Wong splits his time between his studio in Zhongshan, China, and his apartment in Hong Kong. One of his paintings was recently acquired by the Dallas Museum of Art.
