Mark Handforth

ROUGH DARK DIAMOND

2014
painted steel
177 x 84 x 12 inches

Mark Handforth’s visual vocabulary contains an idiosyncratic combination of symbols, icons, and minimal forms, all depicted with the sculptor’s unique scale-shifting sensibility. Rough Dark Diamond is made from a steel pipe, and Handforth’s process of bending the industrial material is evident in the imperfect lines and crimped corners. Elements of Minimalism, Surrealism, and Pop Art are all present in this distilled cultural form that has taken on a strange new life. Handforth’s work is included in numerous museum collections. Among his works in Dallas are Dallas Snake in the Sculpture Garden at the Dallas Museum of Art, and Texas Tom (the big red star) on the grounds of The Rachofsky House.
