Cecily Brown’s paintings celebrate the tradition of oil on canvas, while creating an entirely new language of figurative and abstract form. Drawing inspiration from the “all over” technique of American Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, as well as the entire tradition of figurative painting from the Renaissance to the 20th century, Brown creates her own abstracted universe bearing an unmistakable sensibility of alternately delicate and aggressive paint handling. One of the most important of a generation of younger artists to have reinvigorated the tradition of figurative painting in the 1990s, Brown’s work continues to draw international attention. Cecily Brown was the 2005 2×2 for AIDS and Art Honored Artist for her contributions in the fight against AIDS and her prodigious artistic achievements.
