It is my intention to make poetic work and to be as simple as possible. — Alain Biltereyst

The small works created by Belgian artist Alain Biltereyst insert everyday life into the hard-edge geometric abstraction mastered by artists in the 1960s. Here, Biltereyst’s painterly gesture is readily apparent in the flecked and layered paint that forms flat fields of indigo and cream. The arrangement of simple rectangular components pushing against the other imbues the modest sized work with an interior tension. The fragments of familiar geometries reminds the viewer of commercial art and graphic design, though their scale and deliberate imperfections lends each piece an intimate, lived-in quality.
