Born in Illinois, Greg Drasler constructs uncanny paintings that recall a glamorized version of early twentieth century travel through his focus on baggage and classic cars. In works like Snake Charmer, Drasler transforms imagery reminiscent of old billboard advertisements into dream-like scenes with radiating plaid backgrounds. The empty vehicle – save for one wicker basket in the backseat – allows the viewer to see the possibilities of the trip, both in the freedom of car travel and the anxious homelessness of a life lived on the road. Drasler has exhibited throughout the US and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014.
