There is a ruthless attitude in the paintings of Caitlin Lonegan. “If something doesn’t go satisfactorily,” she explains, “I’ll just unstretch the canvas and try again.” Here, one can see how the aggressive black strokes create an over-all composition, leaving small passages for colors, texture, and brush marks to shine through and carry one’s eyes around the dynamic and charged surface. Caitlin Lonegan was born in North Valley Stream, New York, and is currently living and working in Los Angeles. Lonegan received her BA in Applied Physics & Art from Yale University and an MFA from UCLA in 2010, where she received The Joan Mitchel Foundation MFA Grant.
