Iconic art historical subjects such as bathers, landscapes, portraits, and birds appear in the hybrid painting-videos of Dutch artist Jacco Olivier. To create these works, the artist uses a stop motion technique whereby he continually photographs a painting as he reworks and adjusts it to create the action. Olivier translates a traditionally crisp and smooth moving image through his use of rich, saturated colors and textural brushstrokes, grounding the work firmly in the realm of painting, though with a contemporary twist. In Bird, a work recently installed in a tree in Madison Square Park, Olivier depicts a number of birds in flight, with the effect of their feathers and movement heightened by Olivier’s skill as a painter. There is a genuine, childlike fascination that arises when viewing his work. In speaking about the response he hoped for in his Madison Square Park installation, Olivier said simply, “I hope it puts a smile on their face. Or even inspires them.” In 2010, Olivier had solo exhibitions at the Centro de Arte de Caja de Burgos, Spain, and at the Blaffer Gallery at the University of Houston. He has been included in exhibitions at the MCA Denver and the ZKM, Museum fur Neue Kunst & Medienmuseum, Karlsruhe. He was also included in the 8th SITE Santa Fe Biennial: The Dissolve, curated by Daniel Belasco and Sarah Lewis in 2010. In 2012, Olivier began a residency program at Artpace in San Antonio.
