A leading figure in contemporary Chinese sculpture, Sui Jianguo has experimented with a range of materials and approaches in his decades-long career. His work is often characterized by a sustained investigation with a few select materials, focusing on their inherent properties and potential. In his paintings on paper, seen here, the artist heightens the energy in the materials by making these works in a compressed amount of time. Like many of his sculptural works, these 2D works show an intense awareness of materiality, process, and in particular, the energy of a line in space. Sui has taken part in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale exhibition Memory and Contemporaneity; Restrained Power: Sui Jianguo’s Works, MOCA, Singapore; The Hague Under Heaven-Sui Jianguo Sculpture, Museum Beelden aan Zee; and the Shanghai World Expo Boulevard Sculpture Exhibition, among others.
