Brian Byun

acrylic and colored pencil on canvas
20 x 16 inches

Brian Byun’s symmetrical, rhythmic paintings explode with color and shape in a kaleidoscope of jewel tones. Celestial spheres populate the canvas, as a curvilinear geometry flows between elements, uniting the work. The vertical, ghostly brushstrokes contrasts with the flatness of the acrylic and color pencil. The numerous permutations of these compositions point to Byun’s experimentation and growth as each work builds on the previous painting, and the suggestion of a face emerges throughout his pieces. Born in Seoul, Byun received his BFA from The Art Institute of Chicago, and his MFA from Hunter College.
