German artist Matti Braun is interested in the implications of the cross-cultural interactions that permeate modern life. His recent silk works draw on the artist’s research into traditional silk production and dye techniques that are emblematic of complex commercial, religious, and cultural histories. Braun’s meticulous study of these techniques translates into abstract color field paintings that radiate with calibrated gradations of color reminiscent of iconic Modernist abstract paintings, rather than the design worlds from which the techniques originate. Solo exhibitions of Braun’s work have been held at Rubin Museum of Art, New York; Kunstverein Heilbronn; Arnolfini, Bristol; Kunstverein Braunschweig; and Contemporary Art Center, Noisy-le-Sec.
