Using a variety of digitally-inspired painterly techniques, LA-based Joe Reihsen (b. 1979, Blaine, MN, US) makes paintings in the tradition of Abstract Expressionism while operating under a uniquely contemporary language. Loosely applied veils of airbrush, pumice and residual impressions of brushstrokes from other surfaces are just some of his techniques that lend to a seemingly digital surface. His work is a mesh of smeared and collaged elements that converge into carefully balanced color fields that are as much about the body as they are about our digital sensibilities.
