plaster, gesso, and lacquer on wood

Honing his sense of design during his years as a photographer and graphic artist, Italian multi-media artist Davide Balliano constructs paintings and sculptures using strong lines, repetition, and universally appealing forms. His painting technique mimics the building of a wall, where plaster is layered over wood board and prepped before he applies gesso and lacquer. Balliano’s minimalist works regularly focus on variations of a j-shaped curve, seen here joined and stacked horizontally. The structured and carefully rendered geometric shapes are partially inspired by Balliano’s interest and research into architecture, nature, monuments, and physics. Born in Turin, Balliano lives and works in New York.
