London-based Michael Dean brings to life his bulbous, concrete works by implying gestures that express human emotions, bodily experiences, and language. In XXXX (Working Title) Analogue Series (Muscles), the concrete blobs suspended from the accordioned block suggest a human body, yet each individual form seems to have its own will – moving across the slab of concrete, grouping together, or oozing onto the floor. Even the block visibly slumps when seen from the back. The plastic bags used by Dean in the casting process transfer wrinkles and folds to the surface of each object, reading as slack skin encasing muscular forms. Currently on view at the Nasher Sculpture Center in his first solo exhibition in the United States, Michael Dean’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe.
