The abstract works of Tobias Pils display gestural brushstrokes and sketched structures in a back-and-forth relationship between figure and ground. Pils builds on the language of Abstract Expressionism in his evocative compositions. The limited palette he uses – only black, white, and gray – allows the viewer to freely associate with the piece, interpreting the dynamic lines and shapes into any imagery drawn from their imagination. Pils lives and works in Vienna, and is currently the Artist-in-Residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa.
