With few brushstrokes and a muted color palette, the Paris-born, Los Angeles-based artist Julie Beaufils captures scenes of everyday life in her sensual style equally reminiscent of surrealist abstractions, comic books, and Pop Art. In The Fling, sweeping black lines engulf the female subject, obscuring, hugging, and shadowing her form. Circles like the one in the bottom right corner appear often in her work, acting as framing devices or suggesting record labels. Beaufils most recent exhibition further explored elements of vinyl record collecting by presenting her small drawings inside plastic sleeves leaning within wall-mounted wooden record racks. Viewers were able to flip through the works on paper, simulating the experience of rifling through a record store collection.
