FORGOTTEN CURVES

2013
dye threads, double museum glass, and wooden frames
2 parts, 20 1/8 x 14 1/2 inches each

Swedish-born, Berlin-based artist Nina Canell’s arranges banal materials into elegant formal compositions that accentuate imperceptible relationships between the objects and the outside world. Playing with the audience’s expectation when viewing the seemingly empty frames, Canell’s Forgotten Curves features jewel-toned dyed threads suspended between non-reflective museum glass (a glass specially made to offer protection to works while appearing almost invisible). The threads hover in the center of each blonde frame forming a simple yet magical diptych. Canell’s poetic sculptures utilize magnetism, electrical currents, and natural phenomena, and the artist has frequently collaborated with musician Robin Watkins for interactive installations.
