In his past work, Michael Wetzel depicted images of class, wealth, and privilege. In his recent paintings, the deft brushwork and bright color palette remain, but at the service of an abstract tangle of blobs, lines, and stains. Most discernible are the arcing lines reminiscent of French curves found in architecture and design. The draftsman-like line quality and the title of the piece suggest an architectural space designed to accommodate the high-society activities of his earlier work, though through a decidedly abstract composition.
