Like a number of contemporary photographers, Roe Ethridge’s practice is all-encompassing – not interested in creating a certain type of image, but interested in questioning the entire world of images that surround us. In this seemingly casual, though exquisitely composed, photo of a horse, Ethridge includes evidence of the photo shoot – moving blankets to protect the floor, a shadow of equipment on the left, and a tripod on the right. As a result, we are given a beautiful image of the animal, but more importantly, we are asked to question the commercial or artistic need for an image of this specific horse to exist. Ethridge’s work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions at museums worldwide.
