Seeking a way to calm his restless mind, LA-based Channing Hansen learned to knit, and as a result has been making fiber paintings since 2010. The scrappy, improvised composition in Algo 54 1.0 – part of Hansen’s ongoing Quantum Paintings series – is actually the result of decisions made by a computer algorithm. Hansen is deeply involved in every step of his process, often dyeing and spinning his own yarn, at times weaving holographic polymers into the thread. Elements of craft, Feminist art history, and technology all come together in these brilliant, dynamic works. Hansen has shown his work in exhibitions throughout the US, among them 2014 Made in LA at the Hammer Museum.
