Systems of dots and lines account for many of New York-based Howardena Pindell’s work, at times suggesting a scientific or statistical network, and in other moments forming an organic composition. In Trees, December 2002, the chains of circles hint at an organic origin when paired with its title, implying plant cells or a slide under a microscope. Pindell’s work from the 1970s consisted of compositions of hole punched paper circles, thread, glitter, and other unconventional materials, before she began incorporating the figure into her compositions that more directly reference issues of racism and feminism.
