Sarah Cain makes exhilarating and risky works that push against the idea of what contemporary paintings are “supposed” to look like. In Untitled (Ribbon Weave), the viewer can see Cain paying homage to the ephemera of girlhood by playfully interlacing red ribbons with strands of a shredded paintings. She then includes feathers and string, frilly materials that magically blend into the background. Cain uses pink and baby blue paint as the dominant colors, as if to hint at an adolescent life of play and discovery. Though this work is fun, it is no small feat, as it incorporates a rich array of materials masterfully woven together. Cain’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, New York, Milan, Zurich, and Houston. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Columbus Museum of Art; Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Cain lives and works in Los Angeles.
