In her “Constructs” (1979-84) and “Studio Constructs” (2007-) series, Barbara Kasten arranges glass, mirror, sheet metal, plastic, and paper into sculptural assemblages that cast light and shadow. Kasten then photographs them to produce abstract works that exist at the cross section of photography, sculpture, and painting. Inspired by the Light and Space artists, the Bauhaus, and Constructivism, Kasten creates meditations on light, geometry, and the nature of photography that are embedded in the past, yet feel entirely fresh and contemporary. Kasten’s work is in the collections of MoMA, New York; LACMA, Los Angeles; MCA Chicago; and J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. Her work has been exhibited at Art Institute of Chicago; SF MoMA, San Francisco; International Center of Photography, New York; and Kunstverein Nürnberg, among many others.
