Math Bass’ artworks span painting, performance, sound, video, and sculpture. In Newz!, which is part of an ongoing series of paintings started in 2012, she arranges a visual language of signs that are painted with gouache on unprimed canvas. Signs in the series include alligators, the letter Z, flowers, tunnels, matches, cubes, and arches that vividly interact with each other. These paintings address image production and consumption by employing a language the viewer can read, moving them through and around the composition. Bass lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Human Resources, Los Angeles; and Wallspace, New York.
