Hadi Tabatabai

WEAVE #10

2009
color pencil on paper
9 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches

In this intimate work, Iranian-born artist Hadi Tabatabai creates a weave of white lines. Upon closer inspection, the grid reveals itself to be a precisely incised composition, pressed into the paper. The blue shapes – which appear to be the background – are actually drawn in the foreground, between the receding white grid, producing a work of stark simplicity and beauty. Tabatabai’s work has been shown in England, Italy, and widely in the United States. He has had solo exhibitions at the Anthony Grant Gallery, New York; Brian Gross Fine Art and Stephen Wirtz Gallery, both in San Francisco; and Inde/Jacobs, Marfa.
