Halting and beautifully rendered figures occupy the paintings of Belgian artist Michaël Borremans. Considered by many to be one of the most accomplished painters to emerge in recent decades, Borremans’ works are characterized by a painting technique reminiscent of Old Master works combined with an ambiguous, mysterious tone that somehow feels very contemporary. Here, in a moment that feels both familiar and psychologically charged, a woman quietly contemplates an egg cradled delicately in her hands. Born in Belgium in 1963, Michaël Borremans lives and works in Ghent. His extensive solo exhibition history includes those at the Kunstmusem Basel; the Stedelijk Museum Ghent; and the Cleveland Museum of Art. DMA Hoffman Family Senior Curator Jeffrey Grove has recently published a major monograph on Borremans, as well. His work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; LA County Museum of Art; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; LA MoCA; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, among many others.
