Lacking the traditional ability to paint, Kolkoz, a French art duo consisting of Samuel Boutruche and Benjamin Morea, create “paintings” by wittingly utilizing cliché frames as elements to generate pictures. Alternating between new and antique frame molding, the duo fits frames within frames to create objects that function as paintings while retaining their carnal physical presence. The technique of the geometric pattern defined by its support is a strong reference to Frank Stella’s iconic Black Paintings. Kolkoz’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the UCCA, Beijing; OMR Gallery, Mexico; Wentrup Gallery, Berlin; Galerie Van Der Straeten, Paris; and Maison des Arts, Malakoff. Samuel Boutruche and Benjamin Morea live and work in Paris.
