Dense and moody, this drawing by Dozier Bell gives off a powerful aura not typical of small-scaled works. Her choice of a monochromatic image suggests a nostalgic black-and-white photograph, but also feels like an accurate depiction of the light on a cloudy day. The artist has long been interested in the emotive and psychological effects of various weather conditions, and she cites the German Romantic tradition as an inspiration. Bell is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in painting, and solo shows of her work have been mounted at the Lyman Allyn Museum of Art, New London; the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers; and the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C.
