At age 6, Afghan-Canadian artist Hangama Amiri left Kabul with her family and they became refugees, living in a number of countries before settling in Canada. Amiri’s recent work combines sewn textiles with painted passages to explore cultural, social, and political themes connected to her background, and it draws on both her memories of Afghanistan as well as her current perspective on the region. In this work, a bag of rice – a food staple that could be seen as a reference to home, feminine domestic rituals, and sustenance – is depicted as a fragmented composite, conjuring the hybrid culture of contemporary life and perhaps the artist’s own understanding of identity. Amiri recently received an MFA from Yale University, and has had recent solo exhibitions at Albertz Benda in New York; Towards Gallery, Toronto; T293 Gallery in Rome; and Laurie Swim Gallery in Luneberg.
