In a recent body of work, Daniel Arsham imagines how objects from the present might appear as decayed, archeological finds at some point in the future. These everyday items – toys, musical instruments, and clocks – are cast with mineral materials connected to geology and the passage of time. Here, the mineral selenite is mixed with hydrostone (high density plaster) to form the ghost of the familiar Kit-Cat Clock, its rolling eyes and wagging tail frozen in time. A literal and metaphorical mediation on the passage of time, the clock (in production since 1930s) is evidence of our past, present, and – now through Arsham’s reimagining – our future. Arsham has exhibited internationally and his work is in the public collections of the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, among others.
