Materials and processes with a raw, aggressive, and physical character appear in the work of New York-based Bianca Beck. The artist uses what she calls “spirit colors” – purple, gold, and silver – and “body colors” – red, brown, and black – seen in this untitled work. The biomorphic shapes, scrapes, and scratches she directs at the surface add to the corporeal, earthly quality of this jarring work. Beck was recently featured in a solo show at New York’s White Columns, as well as in group shows at Cheim & Read, West Street Gallery at Harris Lieberman Gallery, Laurel Gitlen, and Renwick Gallery. She has also exhibited in Madrid, Detroit, and Chicago.
