Torey Thornton’s painting practice involves manipulations of perspective and scale, which, ultimately confuse and complicate interpretation. At first glance, Naked Chopper appears to be executed quickly and with attitude, but upon closer observation it begins to present chromatic anomalies that generate a complex visual tension. Thornton’s application of paint creates an interesting juxtaposition between numerous modes of application with a minimal number of marks. The final work is striking and powerful, yet basic and elegant. Thornton graduated from Cooper Union in 2012. His work has been shown both nationally and abroad, including solo exhibitions at Galerie Torri, Paris, and Karma, New York. Recent group exhibitions include spaces such as Modern Art, London; Metropolitan Art Society, Beirut; and Zach Feuer Gallery, New York.
