Tony Horton

MIZU
2011
oil on canvas
72 x 72 inches

Loosely applied veils and washes of paint layer on top of one another to create a shimmering, light-filled atmosphere in this work by Tony Horton. The work’s composition is actively vertical, and evokes a cascade of light or water. The center of the work is a bright void, with the edges defined by darker stains and washes, and as a viewing experience the work creates a space for quiet meditation. Mizu continues the exploration of thinly-layered paint set out by artists like Jules Olitski and Morris Louis, and is a testament to the continued power of abstraction as a means for conjuring psychological or emotional states of mind.
