Jay Shinn

acrylic and latex on birch
80 x 80 x 3/4 inches

Jay Shinn continues the dialogue with space, optics, and light set out by artists like Robert Irwin, James Turrell, and Dan Flavin. In Black Party II, Shinn uses a 12-sided birch polygon as his base. He then lays out interior shapes based on the outside geometry, choosing sixteen out of an infinite number of permutations. By using varying shades of black, illusionistic undulations occur on the surface, subtly interacting with the flat texture of the wood in dynamic and surprising ways. Jay Shinn lives and works between Dallas, New York, and Berlin, and his works are held in a number of private and public collections worldwide.
