Harold Ancart

UNTITLED
2016
oil stick and pencil on paper, mounted on board
43 x 52 inches

Echoes of Abstract Expressionism, Symbolism, and Fauvism can be found in Belgian-born Harold Ancart’s borderline-abstract works. And though his color shifts and gestural paint application might recall innovations of past artists, Ancart has developed a unique, idiosyncratic approach to the space of a painting, seen in this untitled work. The lower section resembles a desert landscape with a mountain in the distance, while the top portion appears as a strange, outer space backdrop. The result is a jarring, dynamic landscape where space is simultaneously defined and distorted. Ancart’s work has been included in a number of exhibitions at galleries and institutions worldwide
