Carla Arocha—Stéphane Schraenen

CHAIR (TYPE III)
2010
glass mirror and steel
24 1/4 x 17 3/4 x 31 1/8 inches
edition of 3

Working as a collective since 2007, Belgian Stéphane Schraenen and Venezuelan Carla Arocha aim to engage viewers in a game of perception. The artists’ work requires an appreciation of space, depth, and environment, and often requires the viewer to slow down and consider the work from a number of angles. In this piece, a casually knocked-over chair covered in mirrors exists simultaneously as a singular object and a fragmented view of its surrounding space. Arocha and Schraenen have been included in group exhibitions at venues such as Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castello; the Biennale of Brussels; Museo Abello, Barcelona; and the Lieu d’Art Contemporain, Sigean.
