My creatures are sort of emotional x-rays… – Ronan Day-Lewis

Rendered in oil pastel on raw canvas, Ronan Day-Lewis’ works are often populated by strange four-legged creatures. Day-Lewis’ frequent trips to the New York Natural History Museum as a child with his father Daniel Day-Lewis inspired his works. In The Familiar (If I Reached Out My Hand Would You Come to Me?), a panoramic view of a creature from an alternate reality and its habitat is on display. A singular spectator stands captivated by the glowing being and, unknowingly he, too, is being watched. Day-Lewis was born in Ireland and received a BA from Yale University. He lives and works in New York, creating films and paintings. He has been the subject of solo and two-person presentations at Spring/Break Art Show, New York City and Los Angeles, and Tomato Mouse Gallery, Brooklyn. His work as a filmmaker includes a trilogy of videos commissioned for the Philip Glass album Les Enfants Terribles, and the short film THE SHEEP AND THE WOLF, which was awarded Best Independent Short at the IFS film festival. In 2021, he directed an album video for an EP by David Chalmin, who is also the composer for Day-Lewis’ upcoming feature directorial debut.
