German-born Volker Hüller’s masterful use of color and line are on full display in Face ‘n’ Vase where the contour lines of a vase on a pedestal echo a geometric face and torso in the upper right of the picture plane. Hüller actively worked the surface of this painting, drawing and scratching lines into the composition, and the bright marigold yellow is balanced by crimson red, charging this interior scene with energy and an off-kilter psychological tone. Hüller’s work has been included in solo and group exhibitions in galleries in the US and Europe, among them Saatchi Gallery, London; the Falckenberg Collection, Hamburg; and Kunsthal Kade, Amersfoort. His work is in the collections of MoMA, New York, and The Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
