Louise Despont, who spends time working in her native state of New York and most recently Bali, makes meditative drawings using architectural drawing tools on ledger paper with colored pencils and graphite. Taking inspiration from Buddhist medical charts, photographs, or even sound waves, her drawings compose ideas and imagery that can take years to collect. Her thoughtful approach and the time required to prepare each new image makes for an older appearance, suggesting a nearly sacred provenance. Despont’s large-scale ENERGY SCAFFOLDS AND INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE (SUBTLE AND CIRCULATORY, FEMALE) features transparent washes of color shaped by precise line-work to present harmoniously symmetrical forms. For Despont, geometric structure both reinforces and demarcates the human form, as to indicate a symbiosis between figure and environment. Despont has shown her work in Los Angeles, New York, London, and Rome.
