For Douglas Melini’s collage-painting hybrids, he cuts vividly painted canvas into strips that he then weaves together or uses as the body for simplified representational shapes, as he has done for the green stems and leaves in Weeds (#3). Melini pushes the hybridity of his process further by dabbing paint onto the collaged surface, while treating the notched, custom frame as part of the composition. The density of the patterning in his works perfectly blends geometric abstraction with ornamentation. Based in New York, Melini received his MFA from CalArts, and his work has been included in solo and group exhibitions throughout the US.
