Through a careful layering of translucent stains, Tokyo-based Shinpei Kusanagi creates landscape paintings that vibrate with light. In Evidence, dark green and pale blue areas establish a traditional landscape format, yet the artist subverts it with the energy of his brushstrokes. Yellow circles suggest the sun or moon, hinting at the dynamic passage of time in an otherwise placid setting. Kusanagi has shown in galleries in the US and Japan, and he has been in exhibitions at Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo, and Palace Pocia, Vienna, among others.
