A driving force behind my painting is the study of light. Painting is my way of organizing and understanding the concepts of light and color. – Greta Waller
Greta Waller’s Ice Block Paintings exhibit the artist’s ongoing investigations into the myriad properties of reflected light and how they might be conveyed with the medium of oil paint. To make the work, Waller positions irregularly shaped blocks of ice in platters, bowls, or vintage tin trays, seen here. The clear block, and its resulting watery pool, become both surface and container for reflections of the surrounding space and light, which Waller deftly conveys in a wide range of subtle color variations and brushstrokes. Waller has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions since 2010.
