The hexagon is a special shape: it has the highest number of sides of any shape that can form a regular grid, and hexagonal grids have the greatest proportion of enclosed area to structure of any grid…On a finished piece, the familiar, quasi-regularity of the fine grout lines belies the complexity of its construction. The hexagonal grid is frequently hidden by the shifting, watery reflections of its polished, undulating surface. Amazingly, the hard-won hex grid, in all its complexity, serves only as a background for the visual ruse. When an un-broken, organic reflection moves over the static grid beneath, the eye is tricked into observing depth. Much like tiles below the surface of a pool, the layered mix of organic and rigid patterns creates a visual ambiguity that gives our surface its mesmerizing appeal. – The Haas Brothers
