Joe Fyfe exhibits his widespread influences through the internationally sourced imagery and materials he uses as the basis of his paintings. Fyfe assembles found text and pieces of fabric into abstract compositions that maintain the physicality of the original material. In Soused, the strips of nylon and cotton curl at their edges and hang awkwardly on the painting’s supports. Fragments of text in multiple languages come together but are reversed to keep the focus on the shape of the letters rather than their meaning. Fyfe travels regularly and has spent extended time in South and Southeast Asia researching the art scenes of Vietnam during his travels as a Fulbright scholar.
