Though Joe Andoe has lived and worked in New York for the majority of his life, he returns to his childhood growing up in Tulsa for the subject matter of his recent paintings of scenes of Americana. The cream and black brushstrokes alternating in the sky of Side Show dwarf the galloping horses below. The simple bodies of the animals add to the dream-like quality of the painting, suggesting the scene lies more in the Andoe’s memory of Oklahoma than in present-day reality. Andoe’s paintings are in the collections of the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Whitney Museum.
