In his relief sculpture, LA-based Julian Hoeber explores irregularities within a given set of formal operations reminiscent of conceptual artist Sol LeWitt. These experiments gain permanence when the system of lines and gridded cells are formed from string, wood, and brads, seen in Vector Model from Going Nowhere, Bas Relief Tile, Small Cross. Using materials frequently found in a craft store, Hoeber lends physicality to the flat grid prominent in modern art, bridging high and low culture and creating, according to the artist, “conceptual art made with an interest in handcraft.” Hoeber’s work, ranging from Op Art-inspired reliefs to playful installations, has been shown extensively throughout the US and Europe.
