Sarah Crowner paints, cuts, and sews together fragments of canvas to make her paintings. Lines and shapes are formed by painted and sewn edges, adding a compositional complexity to the work which might be read as a carefully unified composition or a jumbled-up remix of disparate parts. A reference to textile production, domesticity, and craft is shown in the visible seams, further complicating a work that evokes the history and style of mid-century Hard-Edge painting. Crowner’s work has been included in group exhibitions in the US and Europe, and in 2016 she will be the subject of a solo exhibition at Mass MoCA.
