Glasgow-based Lucy Skaer engages in the transformation and reinterpretation of historical figures and artworks, often creating replicas of familiar forms before altering their appearance in her sculptures. In Liquidity in the Mind of the Fool (5), tin and glass conceal interior objects of quartz and bronze. The lozenge-shaped sculpture is from a project inspired by Plato’s allegory Ship of Fools, where she combined miniatures of Constantin Brancusi’s Newborn into works that reinterpreted the allegory. Skaer has exhibited her projects in the US and Europe, was a finalist for the prestigious Turner Prize in 2009, and represented Scotland at the 52nd Venice Biennale.
