Merging a number of painting styles within a single canvas, Lauren Silva blends digital art with expressive painting techniques, reminding the viewer of the abstract vocabularies seen in early American Modernism, Surrealism, and Color Field painting. Husk captures a complex interplay between the foreground and background in an elaborately layered work. The suggestion of a plant sketched in white overlaps a sea of line and color, hinting at imagery deliberately masked and cropped, and made more ambiguous by Silva’s use of digital printing.
