In a recent series of work, Swiss-French artist Servane Mary prints images of war on Mylar rescue blankets. The image becomes distorted and details are lost in the process, but the result is a visually stimulating work on an item connected to real world crisis situations. Images of women sewing flags have a deep, resonant history, going back to iconic paintings of Betsy Ross sewing the first American flag. Here, the image of the mounds of fabric flags combined with the grid of the blanket’s creases results in a chattered, vibrating image with layered meanings. Mary lives and works in New York. She has exhibited in Bridgehampton, New York, Toronto, Paris, Miami, Los Angeles, Salzburg, and Austria.
